The NUCC Health Care Provider Taxonomy Code Set is a hierarchical code set maintained by the National Uniform Claim Committee. It is used in the NPPES NPI Registry to classify each provider's type and specialty. Every NPI record includes one or more taxonomy codes, with one designated as primary.
Taxonomy codes are 10 characters (letters and digits). The first three characters typically identify the provider category; subsequent characters narrow to a specific specialty or subspecialty.
